This site was unusual as it was almost perfectly square-shaped and had an unusually small area of 180sqm. The existing 1920’s house had had a series of unsympathetic additions. The brief was to upgrade the facilities and maximize the effect of the northern light on the interior of the property. We retained some of the existing external walls as the rear they were built on the boundary. The design relocated the living rooms to the front of the house to capture the north light and then opened onto a small courtyard. The side off street parking was maintained and doubled as an entry path to the side Front Door. In addition to the new kitchen and living areas, the ground level also accommodated a separate sitting room/ study and a guest bedroom and bathroom. The upper level contained a generous main bedroom, second bedroom and separate study nook that could be converted into a separate toilet as well as a main bathroom. These clients did not want an ensuite as they preferred a larger bathroom than two spatially-compromised bathrooms. |
