The original brief for this semi-detached home was ambitious: a complete redesign including a new garage, pool, and an additional three levels. As often happens with complex residential projects, the strategy evolved. Rather than undertaking everything at once, we shifted to a staged approach, allowing the home to be transformed progressively while remaining functional and financially manageable for the clients.
Stage One: Laying the Groundwork
The first stage focuses on internal renovations to the main level and creating internal access to the basement. Construction commenced at the end of January, revealing what many renovation projects do, that existing conditions can hold more surprises than anticipated. Rectification works to the original structure were more extensive than hoped, requiring careful reassessment and refinement of the design documentation.

This phase has involved updating drawings to ensure the current works integrate seamlessly with possible future renovations. The goal has been to preserve the integrity of the long-term vision while keeping immediate cost increases to a minimum. Every decision at this stage is made with foresight: how will today’s changes support tomorrow’s additions?
Designing with Flexibility in Mind
A key strategy for managing budget without compromising design intent has been the consideration of an IKEA kitchen for Stage One. This allows for a well-resolved, functional outcome now, while leaving open the possibility of future upgrades as the project progresses through later stages.
Staged construction requires a different mindset from both architect and client. It is less about a single grand reveal and more about thoughtful sequencing — ensuring each phase stands on its own while contributing to a cohesive whole.
Collaboration on Site
We are working closely with builders Nick and Josh from Palisade Projects, whose practical insight and attention to detail have been invaluable as the realities of the existing structure unfold. Interiors for this stage have been developed by Leo Carroll in our office, ensuring continuity between architectural intent and interior resolution.
While the project’s scope may have shifted, its ambition remains intact. By approaching the transformation in stages, we are able to respond to the building as it reveals itself, balancing design aspirations with pragmatic decision-making, and setting the foundation for a carefully considered future evolution of the home.
