I am absolutely thrilled to share some wonderful news from the studio.
One of our latest projects has officially received the green light from Woollahra Council! Navigating the council approval process can often feel like a waiting game, but this particular journey was a dream. We lodged the application at the beginning of February, and it was approved within just three months—with virtually no changes required. It’s an incredible result that speaks volumes about the value of thorough planning and respectful design.

The Challenge: Good Bones, Dark Spaces
The project is a significant alteration and addition to an existing family residence in Vaucluse. The original house had a wonderful street presence and great “bones,” but as you moved further inside, it told a different story. A series of 1980s additions at the rear had turned the home into a bit of a warren. It was a maze of awkward stairs, poor natural light, and a layout that felt completely disconnected from the beautiful outside garden. Our client loved the character of their home but desperately needed a space that flowed naturally and welcomed the sun.

The Design: Bridging Old and New
Our design approach is all about celebration and separation. Instead of a blanket demolition, we are retaining and lovingly renovating the character-filled original front of the house. Here is how we are transforming the rest:
The Demolition: We are removing the dated 1980s rear section to start fresh.
The New Pavilion: In its place, we’ve designed a contemporary, light-filled living wing that feeds directly onto the garden, creating that seamless indoor-outdoor connection so vital for Sydney living.
The Private Oasis: Above this pavilion sits a brand-new main bedroom wing.
The Clever Connector: To bridge the old and the new, we’ve introduced an internal garden courtyard between the two structures. This architectural breathing space allows natural light to flood deep into the original house while encouraging cross-ventilation throughout the new rear addition.
What’s Next?
Our clients are absolutely over the moon that we secured approval so quickly. With this major milestone wrapped up, we are now diving headfirst into the detailed design phase and documentation. Our goal is to hand over the keys to the builders and commence construction in the new year. I can’t wait to share more updates as this beautiful transformation comes to life!
